Which freelance jobs should you bid on? A practical fit checklist

Seven questions to decide quickly whether an opportunity deserves a proposal — before you spend time writing one.

Every proposal costs time, and often money. The fastest way to win more work is usually to bid on fewer, better-fitting jobs. Here is a checklist you can run in under a minute.

The seven questions

  • Skill match — do the core requirements match what you do best, not just a keyword?
  • Portfolio evidence — can you point to a real project that proves it?
  • Budget fit — does the budget work for your rate and the scope described?
  • Client quality — is there a history of hiring and paying reliably?
  • Competition — is the job already crowded, or still early?
  • Project clarity — is the scope clear enough to propose confidently?
  • Experience fit — is the level right for you, neither too junior nor a stretch you can’t support?

Turn answers into a decision

If skill match and evidence are strong, most other weaknesses can be addressed in the proposal — for example, by asking a clarifying question about vague scope. If skill match or evidence is weak, it is usually better to skip.

A fit score is a tool for prioritizing your time. It is not a prediction of whether you will be hired.

Proposlee’s Opportunity Fit is built on exactly these seven factors, with the reasons shown for each, so you can make this decision quickly and consistently.
